After he graduated from St. John's University in shanghai in 1921, he went to study in the United States, and got his MBA degree at Harvard University and the degree of Doctor of Economics at Columbia University. During his days of study he chose accounting as his career for lifetime. In 1924 he returned to the motherland with a wish to save the nation through industry and education.

In two years, he was appointed Dean of studies and Head of Business School at Ji'nan University, introducing and imparting the advanced theory and techniques of accounting from the West.

In January 1927, Mr. Pan Xulun set up an accountant's office and named it Lixin, after a quotation from Confucius, a famous ancient Chinese thinker and educator. He made his name with fairness, credit and justice in dealing, with his good knowledge of Chinese and English languages and of western culture, with his eloquence, efficiency and quality in business applications, appeals and consultations.

From his personal experiences of being an accountant, Mr.Pan Xulun felt the lack of accountants and the need of spreading new approaches of accounting in China. That was why he engaged himself in education not long after he set up the accountant's office. From 1928, he opened successively a continuation school, a correspondence school, a specialized school and a senior vocational school, and a publication and printing house, all by the name of Lixin, providing the society with tens of thousands of accounting workers.

In1937, Mr.Pan Xulun officially set up Lixin Accounting Institute. After the Japanese invaders occupied shanghai, he continued his education in the rear area, where he had to go around to raise a fund, since there was a great financial difficulty. As soon as the anti-Japanese war was over, he came back to shanghai and again to raise a fund to rebuild the campus for Lixin accounting institute. Under his care, Lixin was still training accountants after the foundation of the People's Republic of China. During the time when Lixin was suspended because of the rearrangement of institutions of higher learning, Mr Pan Xulun still, as always, gave his attention and support to accounting education, and continued his research in the field of accounting.

In the late 1970s, to vitalize accounting in China, Mr Pan Xulun, although in his eighties, proposed the restoration of Lixin accounting institute with great aspiration. In order to train more accountants greatly and urgently needed in the socialist economic construction, he proposed the new approaches of a tuition-charging day school and recommended employment upon graduation (then rare), which would save a great amount of education fund to run the school. Mr Pan Xulun dedicated himself to the research, education and practice of accounting in China. His lifelong efforts in the field have immortal feats in the history of Chinese accounting. In recognition of his outstanding achievement, the Ministry of Finance awarded him a special honour in October 1985.

Mr. Pan xulun passed away on November 8,1985, at the age of 93. a statue of Mr. Pan Xulun was erected on the campus of Lixin in November 1987.
